Last week, our new co-produced poster was unveiled across the streets of Lewisham to promote healthy eating within the borough.
Over the last few months, we have had the honour to co-produce this new poster with Public Health Lewisham on the Childhood Obesity Trailblazer Programme (COTP), the local community, Shared Intelligence, JCDecaux, and Outsmart.
The need for this poster
Lewisham’s COTP aims to restrict advertising for products high in fat, sugar and salt whilst simultaneously developing and displaying health-promoting posters co-produced by communities across the borough.
Their ambition is to halve childhood obesity rates by 2030 through the borough’s Whole Systems Approach to Obesity: changing the environment we live in by making healthier options the easiest choice for children and their families.
Co-producing as one team
Throughout the project, we worked together as one team to develop the message and imagery that would encourage a positive change for good.
We initiated a set of workshops with our existing partners within the local Evelyn Community Centre and Goldsmiths Community to gather research and feedback for the poster as well as discuss obesity and healthy lifestyle tips. In groups, we created mind maps that explored keywords and imagery related to healthy eating and the causes of obesity.
We explored a variety of different ideas with the community which we fine-tuned with Public Health Lewisham on the Childhood Obesity Trailblazer Programme (COTP), Shared Intelligence, JCDecaux, and Outsmart in further workshops to create one final poster.
The final poster design
The final poster design encourages people to eat a variety of new fruit & vegetables to receive a broad range of nutrients to improve their health. For the focal image, we created a ‘fruit and vegetable forest’ which emphasises a sense of discovery and exploration when trying these new foods.
As well as including some common fruit and vegetables which are used by the Lewisham community such as tomatoes, peppers, plantain and squash; we also included some uncommonly used vegetables such as beetroot, aubergine, artichokes and turnips to encourage people (especially children) to look closer at the poster to understand which foods form this imaginative forest. The Catford cat can also be seen playing amongst the fruit and vegetables, bringing a connection to Lewisham within the image.
As this was a poster for Lewisham Council, we made sure to adhere to their brand guidelines by using their fonts and logo respectively.
As well as sending a positive message, the poster also features a prominent link to the Lewisham website which provides access to resources and information on healthy eating. A QR code positioned next to the website link makes it even quicker to access information whilst on the move.
